June 8, 2022
In this episode of “The Runway Decade Podcast”, hosts Bill Bush and Pete Bush, advisors at Horizon Financial Group, talk with guest Joanie Montelaro, a REMAX Professional and recipient of the Rising Star of the Year award. They discuss Joanie’s professional journey into the real estate profession, life in her 50s, and her retirement plans.
Episode Highlights
- 02:35 – Joanie says that she ultimately ended up in banking as a career and loved it, did it for years, and worked her way up.
- 04:40 – Joanie mentions that God has blessed her with good mentors in her path, even in her banking career.
- 07:05 – Bill and Pete discuss with Joanie about life in her 50s.
- 09:05 - Joanie wants to be around and be able to bend over and sit up with her grandkids one day.
- 11:10 - There's a lot to consider if you are planning to buy a second home; it comes down to doing the math and asking yourself some hard questions.
- 13:50 - If you're going to be a grandparent, surely you want a space for the grandkids.
- 15:50 - People realize that they have to spend so much time at home due to work from home, so they need more space.
- 18:20 - If you have your freedom of purpose, you're doing all the stuff that is important to you, and yet you can still have fun at work, that’s even better.
- 20:00 – Joanie says that she’s never been to Wyoming and she loves horses. So would like to go to such places.
- 23:22 - If you're thinking of upsizing or downsizing, give Joanie a call, as with retirement, the sooner you get in touch with a professional and start planning, that’s better.
Three Key Points
- Joanie had clients coming in from out of town; they couldn't travel because of the pandemic so, she would go preview houses for them, she would get on video, and go through houses, neighborhood, and walk them through. She would give them the lay of the land without them physically being there.
- For people who are in their 60s, Joanie asks them, how much square footage are they comfortable living with? If they think they want to downsize? What are their objectives? Is it less overhead or is it less maintenance? So there are a lot of things to take into account.
- You don't have to quit working to gain four freedoms (freedom of time, freedom of money, freedom of relationships, and freedom of purpose), and entrepreneurs, especially, can nail a lot of that and still productively earn an income.
